I had my passport stolen in Ukraine last year. I got a replacement from the U.S. Embassy. But I have been in Ukraine without a visa for about 18 months. I want to fix it and become legal here. Any advise about what to do?

Hi, my son went to Ukraine last March and was supposed to be for only 30 days, but he decided to stay and now his visa is expired. I need to buy his ticket here in the USA by 8/20/2009 buy I am afraid he is going to have problems to get out of that country without being deported. He wants to go back next summer….Should I wait for him to fix his visa before I buy his ticket???? Can he go to the US embassy and ask for an extension, even if it already expired?? whatt are the concequences…..please advise.

    Hi there,

I’ve just read your blog as I’m travelling to Kazakhstan through Russia very soon and I have just realised that the train from Moscow departs on the date of my visa expiry, but does not leave Russia till two days after! Do you have any suggestions? I have a british passport and I’m really worried about getting stuck at the border.

    Many thanks!

Hi, I’m Russia on a visitor’s visa. it’s only good for 3 months, but I’m here with my husband who’s finishing university and we need to stay for 10 months. we tried to apply for a temporary residence permit, but they said it will take 6 months to get and I still must leave when my first visa expires. do you know if I just stay anyway if they would still issue the residence permit to someone on an expired visa? also, if I just stay the 10 months and let the visa expire what’s the worst that could happen to me when exiting the country finally? what would deportation include? would they take me to jail? I’m really worried about all this, but y husband seems to think it will be fine…we’ll just pay a penalty and leave and not be allowed back for 5 years. is it really that simple? if you have any information please help. thanks
